Dear Kayo and all!
I would like to discuss some moments in relation to the creativity of
Pitirim Sorokin.
Substantially, with respect to the topic of our discussion, we might
distinguish four main points in the results of his sociological (and
culturological) work:
1. Sorokin introduced into the sociocultural studies the "three-
dimensional" approach - the notion of the three sociocultural
supersystems' synchronous existence and, thus, he realizes "the
withdrawal of one-dimensional world-viewing" (S.D. Lebedev, 2000);
2. Sorokin's "three-dimensional" reality means that every time
(always) three equally real systems of sociocultural processes
(including cognitive area) exist and are active synchronously, but one
of them, by rotation, is dominant (alternately, one after another,
but always through the intermediate - integral - form); thus realizing
the cyclic ascending process of global cultural evolution;
3. The crucial point is that each of the three sociocultural super-
systems (revealed by Sorokin: two polar - Sensate, Idealist; and one
intermediate - Integral) - each one embraces in itself the
corresponding type of all the constituting basic cultural systems
(they are, according to Sorokin "language, science, philosophy,
religion, the fine arts, ethics, law, and the vast derivative systems
of applied technology, economics, and politics."). Thus, as Sorokin
stated, the Sensate supersystem is made up of: sensate science,
sensate philosophy, sensate religion of a sort, sensate fine arts,
sensate ethics, law, economics and politics, along with predominantly
sensate types of persons and groups, ways of life and social
institutions. Likewise, the Ideational and Integral supersystems
consist respectively of Ideational and Integral types of all these
systems.
4. Substantially, there are, referring to Sorokin, "millions of
singular sociocultural phenomena that make the superorganic world of
reality appear to us the form of the integrated systems and
unintegrated congeries." However, ultimately we have the three types
of the vastest sociocultural supersystems, as well as the three basic
ideologies of these vastest sociocultural supersystems that, according
to Sorokin, are "based upon certain major premises or certain ultimate
principles". Since the ideologies of the supersystems are the vastest
and, thus, - their major premises or fundamental principles deal with
the ultimate and most general truth, proposition, or value.
Virtually, this notion of Sorokin's "ideology" is equal to the meaning
of the "cosmology" we use in our Biocosmological construction (i.e.,
the meaning of "cosmology" in its original sense).
=
Therefore, our primary task is to reveal the three main types of a
"cosmology" and, further, to deal with our concrete tasks.
=
One more important thing is that, of course, Sorokin appreciated the
cultural potential of Russian science. However, for instance, Sorokin
himself was expatriated from Russia in the 1920s for the dissent with
the ruling regime.
Substantially, at any rate, Sorokin substantiated the crisis and
decline of the current Sensate (Western) civilization and the coming
era of the Integral (Intermediate) global civilization. In this, he
foresaw rather the predominant role of Asian countries (including
India and Japan) than the role of cultural Russia.
-=
I hope this addition is of some use for our discussion.
My best,
K.Khroutski
