Bike Fort Collins - Advocates for Safe and Enjoyable Bicycling in Fort Collins

Hello everyone -

It's been a busy summer so far and it doesn't seem to be letting up.  The rain has put a damp-er on some of us who prefer to not ride when it's wet.

Here are a few things you may be interested in.

The Bicycle Safety Act, signed into law by Colorado Governor Ritter, will take effect August 5, 2009.

Major points of this act are:

For bicyclists...

The 3 foot rule.  Bicyclists get at least 3 feet of space when vehicles pass. To help give you 3 feet, motorists can cross a centerline when clear to pass you safely.

Riding 2 abreast.  Two bicyclists may ride side-by-side when clear but please move to single-file to allow other vehicles to pass.

Lane rights.  It's prudent to ride as far right as practicable, but we don't have to ride in the debris, either. Sometimes it is just safer to ride in the right half of the lane; and now we have the right to do so.  Just be careful out there.

Ride with traffic.  Bicyclists can ride to the far right or far left on a one-way street. But remember, riders still have to ride with the flow.

For vehicle drivers...

Bicycles are legal on public roads.  Everyone should know and respect this.  Bicyclists are also required to follow the same rules of the road as our vehicle driving brethren.

Keep a 3 foot passing distance.  Drivers are now allowed to cross a double yellow lane in order to safely pass bicyclists. If the traffic isn't clear, relax and wait a moment for the right time. A minute or two shouldn't inconvenience anyone.

Pass with care.  Make sure there aren't any oncoming bicyclists when passing another car.

Thanks again for all your support!
