A recently reported study of a couple thousand commuting cyclists in
Portland, OR (Platinum Level, LAB Bike Friendly Community) is reviewed
in the following link.

The article includes an imbedded copy of the original research paper,
with some Q/A discussion.

In a nutshell: infrastructure development/maintenance and use of
helmets were the strongest factors relating to injury prevention.
Curiously, use of lights and reflective clothing were not
statistically significant factors in preventing traumatic injury.

I don't know about you, but I will continue to wear a safety vest,
reflective screaming-yellow jacket and my bright yellow helmet with
front and back blinking lights. Basically, when the motorist who
clips me claims they didn't see me, the arresting officer's or jury's
eyes will pop clear out of their heads!

For some lively discussion of this article by folks in Ann Arbor,
Michigan, go to the wbwc
website (Washtenaw Bicycling and Walking Coalition). I posted this
article on their
Google discussion page under the same title as this post about a week
ago, and the
discussion of this article is, I think, very illuminating (sorry for
the pun!).
