Bike Fort Collins - Advocates for Safe and Enjoyable Bicycling in Fort Collins, Colorado

Hello everyone -
What a tease this Colorado is.  Last week we had weather just begging us to get out and ride.  And today, Saturday the 20th, we have snow and cold. Don't you just love it?

Here are a few things I want to share with you all.  Some fun things and a few bicycle-centric items passed on to me by a friend who is always looking out for the Fort Collins bicycling community.

From the Enjoyable category...

The Fort Collins Bike Library is beginning its 3rd season on April 3 and is accepting applications for volunteers to help with this incredible program. We ask that our volunteers be over the age of 18 and be willing to help improve the Fort Collins Bike Library experience.  The hours of operation will be Thursday through Sunday, from 10 am to 6 pm.  We rely solely on volunteers to help with providing this free and unique service to the public.  If you have a couple of free hours a week or month, please contact Sage Faucette at volu...@bikefortcollins.org.  For more information, please visit us at www.fcbikelibrary.org and click on the "Volunteer" tab.

MARKEY RESOLUTION NAMES APRIL
‘NATIONAL DISTRACTED DRIVING
AWARENESS MONTH’

WASHINGTON, March 17, 2010—Congresswoman Betsy Markey today introduced H.Res. 1186, a resolution that will designate the month of April as National Distracted Driving Awareness Month. The resolution urges all Americans to consider the lives of others on the road and to put an end to distracted driving.

According to a recent National Motor Vehicle Crash Causation Survey, 80 percent of all traffic incidents and 65 percent of all near-crashes involve some type of distraction. Driver distraction was reported to have been involved in 16 percent of all fatal crashes in 2008, a 12 percent increase since 2004.

In 2008, 9-year-old Erica Forney of Fort Collins, Colorado was struck and killed by a distracted driver while riding her bicycle home from school.

“Having experienced this tragedy in my own community, this is an issue of particular importance to me,” said Rep. Markey, “When any of us get behind the wheel of a car, driving safely and responsibly should be our top priority. Increasing awareness of this dangerous trend is an important step to keeping our families, neighborhoods, and communities safe.”

Full text of Rep. Markey’s resolution:

Whereas over 600 billion text messages were sent in 2008, nearly four times the number sent in 2006;

And straight from him to all of us...

By now you have probably seen as many of the reports about Fort Collins being the least obese city in America. (And yes...Boulder being the Healthiest. :)  But have you seen the reasons why? If you dig down into the Gallup poll study you find this report.

http://www.gallup.com/poll/126362/Good-Health-Habits-Norm-Slimmest-Metro-Areas.aspx

And the #1 reason that folks in Fort Collins rank so high in the health index...ACCESS TO SAFE PLACES TO EXERCISE!!!

So congratulations to Bike Fort Collins for being the cyclists advocate for 'Safe and Enjoyable Cycling in Fort Collins' (emphasis mine). This is exactly what the doctor has ordered. Your work is paying off.  Directly with cyclists and with the general public feeling it is a safe place to go out and exercise. Seeing others out enjoying themselves is infectious.

And certainly the support from our state representatives for helping us be the 'nanny' state we are and developing the legislation that helps create our quality of life. Non-smoking ordinances, cycling legislation and of course Driver Cell Phone legislation. Although resisted by many at the time of implementation, all of these regulations help provide for the safety of the common public which helps us all be more active and healthier. And a healthy public can't be all bad. Isn't that what it is all about??

Bike Fort Collins - Advocates for Safe and Enjoyable Bicycling in Fort Collins, Colorado

Hello everyone -
Now that the weather is finally cooperating and teasing us out onto the city streets and open roads, let’s be extra careful out there.  It’s been a while since car and truck drivers have seen most of us on the road and unless we make sure they see us, they may not see us…   Case in point, the early morning March 28th accident on Highway 1 and Gregory Road (Coloradoan Article).  We sincerely hope Dr. Anthony Simon’s condition improves.

And as part of our Mission to be advocates for safe and enjoyable bicycling in Fort Collins, we want let you know about a series of public meetings.  There’s something here for everyone.

Please know that we all have the same goal.  Read on…

~~~~~~~~~~o~~~~~~~~~~o~~~~~~~~~~o
Bike Co-op Announces Bike Town Meetings to Identify Bicycle “Issues and Opportunities”
As a part of their effort to provide community input into the effort to Plan Fort Collins for the next 5 – 50 years, the Fort Collins Bike Co-op announces a series of community “listening sessions” or “Bike Town Meetings” to identify issues and opportunities for the future of bicycling in the city.
To achieve as much public input as possible, the Co-op will hold nine public meetings over the next seven weeks.  The information we gather will be delivered to the Bicycle Advisory Committee, the Transportation Board, the planning team for Plan Fort Collins and other groups or organizations as appropriate.
The following meetings are open to the public.  Both cyclists and non-cyclists are invited to bring a lunch and to provide comments on bicycling opportunities and issues throughout Fort Collins.  The first and last meetings will focus on the city in general while the other discussions will concentrate on specific areas of the Fort Collins as indicated below.  We will try to address some of the questions listed but please bring your own questions, concerns and great ideas!
Bike Fort Collins - Advocates for Safe and Enjoyable Bicycling in Fort Collins, Colorado
Hello everyone -
Here is another entry for the "enjoyable side of life” category.
Question; How is it that one company keeps coming up with such super-cool marketing concepts?  It’s just not fair!
The ever popular Tour de Fat, Bike-in-Movies, Short-Track racing, wind power, and on, and on, and on… And to just push it over the edge, this company supports your local non-profit organizations.  We’re not talking lip service, we’re talking real, honest to goodness, financial support.
And speaking of lips, this next bit is about one of their latest outreach programs.  If you like New Belgium beer, and are the creative sort (digitally speaking), read on…
~~~~~~~~~~o~~~~~~~~~~o~~~~~~~~~~o
Fort Collins, Colorado, March 29, 2010 – New Belgium Brewing, maker of Fat Tire Amber Ale, is seeking short digital, film and video submissions for the first season of its traveling cLips of Faith Beer & Film Tour. Chosen entries will screen in fourteen cities throughout the summer and fall of 2010. The top three winning filmmakers will travel to New Belgium Brewing in Fort Collins, CO for a private screening and beer dinner extraordinaire. For submission guidelines visit www.clipsoffaith.com.

“The cLips of Faith Beer & Film tour is a celebration of the innate creativity of both brewing and film,” said event director, Meredith Giske. “We’re looking for eclectic and creative short film submissions to complement the beers we are bringing from our Lips of Faith portfolio. These are some of the most creative beers we make, so it will be a one- two combo like you’ve never seen.”

Each stop along the fourteen-city tour will feature an outdoor screening of the collected films, a full tasting of New Belgium’s Lips of Faith (http://www.newbelgium.com/beer) beers and food from local vendors. All proceeds will benefit local bike non-profits. The series will run between mid-June and mid-October.

“At this point, we’re looking for you and your friends to create something original and fun for all of us to watch,” said Giske. “We’re looking for stories that touch on beer, whimsy or sustainability in the categories of comedy, drama, adventure, documentary or animation. The slate is completely blank and the possibilities are endless.”

To learn more about New Belgium’s cLips of Faith series or to submit content, go to www.clipsoffaith.com. Films will be judged by the creative team at New Belgium Brewing plus one celebrity judge (if you’re a celebrity who wants to judge, please contact us!).  All submission materials are nonreturnable. There is no fee to enter. Good beers, good films, good luck!

Bike Fort Collins - Advocates for Safe and Enjoyable Bicycling in Fort Collins, Colorado

Hello everyone -
Do you ever wish that the pledges you make could really make a difference?  After the über tragic accident in the Gulf of Mexico recently, people I know have started to think more about the impact they’re making on the world on which we live.

In a recent Boulder Daily Camera article, the non-profit organization, Bikes Belong Coalition is challenging all of us bike riders to take the pledge to support bicycling (article here).  It only takes a million of us… not that much, when you think about it.

After you take the pledge plunge, pass it on to all your pedaling pals.

Here’s the scoop...
~~~~~~~~~~o~~~~~~~~~~o~~~~~~~~~~o
The pledge
The Boulder-based Bikes Belong Coalition hopes to get 1 million people to sign a pledge in support of bicycling as an alternative mode of transportation. The pledges will be used to influence national legislation aimed at cycling. Here is what the pledge reads:
"I am for bikes. I'm for long rides and short rides. I'm for commuting to work, weekend rides, racing, riding to school, or just a quick spin around the block. I believe that no matter how I ride, biking makes me happy and is great for my health, my community and the environment we all share. That is why I am pledging my name in support of a better future for bicycling -- one that is safe and fun for everyone. By uniting my voice with a million others, I believe that we can make our world a better place to ride.”
How to sign
Hello everyone -
Our You Know Me campaign is getting some exposure and if you haven’t seen it, we’re posting the photos on our web site, here (you will recognize some of these fine people).  This is what it’s all about…
We are cyclists that teach your kids and the doctors that take care of your heart or teeth. We are the commuting cyclists that just go about our business every day, just like everyone else. You know us, we ride a bike. We all share the same roads and should be mindful of and respect each others chosen mode of transportation.
Come visit and see what it’s all about.  If you like what you see and would like to be a part of the campaign, please contact me at this email address.
Bike Fort Collins - Advocates for Safe and Enjoyable Bicycling in Fort Collins, Colorado
Hello everyone -
There’s been a lot of chatter about Blackhawk and their newly enacted ordinance prohibiting bicycle riding within their town.  This is more than just idle talk.  This is real.  This moves the Colorado bicyclist to fifth-class status as a legal vehicle for the roadways in Colorado.  Cyclists are legally entitled to use the roadways and this is a slap in the face and a giant step back for everything we have worked for.
"Black Hawk police are now issuing a ticket to anyone “caught riding” through town.Black Hawk’s Board of Aldermen is making it clear that they don’t want bicyclists or bicycle events in town. The Board approved an ordinance banning bicycle riding on almost every street in Black Hawk. This includes the only paved street (Gregory Street-formerly State Highway 279) connecting the Peak to Peak Highway with the Central City Parkway.  Black Hawk police are now issuing a ticket to anyone “caught riding” through town."
That is what they can do.  Here is what we can do.  Email these people and tell them you won’t spend a dime in their town!
