MAINLAND Portugal's strongest quake in 32 years shook buildings and
caused public alarm, but no damage or injuries were reported.
The magnitude 6.0 undersea quake shook buildings across southern
Portugal, the Meteorological Institute said.
Officials said it was also felt in Spain and Morocco.
The quake occurred at 9.35pm (AEDT) yesterday beneath the Atlantic about
700km southwest of Lisbon, the Portuguese capital, Portugal's
Meteorological Institute said.
Small earthquakes are more common in Portugal's mid-Atlantic Azores Islands.
Locals and media reports in Portugal said the quake knocked objects off
shelves and desks.
In Spain, the National Geographic Institute said the quake was felt in
the Andalusia region, in such cities as Seville and Cadiz, and was also
felt in tall buildings as far north as Madrid. It said there were no
reports of damage.
Two tremors were also felt in cities around Morocco, the country's state
news agency said, with Moroccans frantic for information jamming the
phone lines to the state seismic observatory.
There were no reports of deaths or damage.
