Raging Rains/Floods leave 47 dead or missing in China

BEIJING, June 10 (AFP) Jun 10, 2007

At least 47 people are dead or missing and more than 260,000 have been
left homeless by floods and landslides set off by torrential rain in
southern China, officials and press reports said Sunday.

Four days of heavy rains have pummelled the regions of Guangdong,
Guangxi, Guizhou and Hunan.

Xinhua news agency reported 14 people killed and four missing in
Guangdong province where floods and landslides have demolished more than
3,000 homes and caused damages estimated at more than 266 million yuan
(35 million dollars).

In neighboring Guangxi, 13 died and one is missing as floods destroyed
more than 8,700 homes and forced the evacuation of 103,000 residents,
the Guangxi civil affairs bureau said in a statement.

In Hunan province, three people are dead, one is missing and some
158,000 are homeless, Xinhua said in a separate report.

In Guizhou, the death toll is seven with four missing. The rains
destroyed 3,000 homes and inundated large areas of farmland, it said.
