N. Korea: Hundreds Feared Dead After Rain*

Friday July 21, 2006 9:46 AM

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) - North Korea's official news agency reported
Friday that ``hundreds'' were dead or missing as a result of recent
heavy rains.

The North's official Korean Central News Agency said tens of thousands
of houses and public buildings were destroyed or partially damaged,
along with hundreds of roads, bridges and railroads.

``This heavy rain left hundreds of people dead or missing in many parts
of the country,'' KCNA said.

No exact figures were given.

The report was the first acknowledgment by the North of human casualties
from the rains that have washed across the Korean Peninsula this month.
Earlier, an aid group operating in the communist nation said the toll of
dead and missing was more than 100.
