Tropical Storm Boris strengthens at sea*

The Associated Press

MEXICO CITY -- Tropical Storm Boris strengthened unexpectedly to just
below hurricane strength Sunday but remained far from land over the
eastern Pacific, forecasters said.

The U.S. National Hurricane Center said Boris' wind speeds increased to
70 mph (110 kph) and it could become a hurricane Sunday night. But it is
expected to weaken on Monday.

The threshold for hurricane status is sustained winds of 74 mph (119 kph).

Boris is located 760 miles (1,225 kilometers) southwest of the tip of
Baja California, forecasters said. It is moving west at 10 mph (17 kph).

A second tropical storm, Cristina, is about 1,345 miles (2,165
kilometers) off Mexico's shore, and is moving west at 9 mph (15 kph)
with winds of 40 mph (60 kph).
