AUSTRALIA - STRONG winds forecast for the Sunshine Coast today are
expected to hinder efforts to control a bushfire that has caused chaos
in the region.
Police declared an emergency situation after the blaze erupted west of
Caloundra shortly after 11am (AEST) yesterday and roared through state
pine forests.
Fast-moving flames and billowing smoke fanned by strong, dry winds
forced the evacuation of homes and businesses in the area.
The bushfire also closed an airport and a school, and traffic came to a
standstill as roads were closed.
Almost 100 firefighters battled the blaze on the ground yesterday and
overnight, including 35 sent from Brisbane to relieve crews at the scene.
Waterbombing helicopters are expected to rejoin the fight at first light.
Cooler temperatures and easing winds have helped slow the flames, but
today's forecast for moderate to fresh south to south-easterly winds
could again increase the fire danger.
Queensland Fire and Rescue Service spokesman Andrew Berkman said the
fire had not breached containment lines and 45 fire fighters would be on
hand at first light.
