Raging Bushfires near Katherine in the Northern Territory are causing
poor visibility and have forced road closures due to thick smoke.

A fire on Gorge Road near Maud Creek is heading towards Katherine,
Northern Territory Police said.

"The second fire is about 10 kilometres south of Katherine on the Stuart
Highway, and is also heading towards Katherine," emergency services
spokeswoman Sue Bradley said.

"Both fires are causing intermittent road closures and poor visibility.

"The public are advised to exercise caution ... and obey all traffic
direction."

There is a total fire ban in the Northern Territory and people are urged
to phone police with information about anyone lighting fires.
