CANADA- Extreme weather turned deadly when a lightning strike killed one
person and injured six others at an Alberta provincial park.
"These things don't happen very often but when they do, obviously there
are severe consequences," RCMP Cpl. Kevin Krebs told CTV Edmonton.
He said seven people took shelter from a thunderstorm under a tree at a
Pigeon Lake Provincial Park boat launch about 1 p.m. MDT on Saturday.
The park is located about 80 kilometres southwest of Edmonton.
Lightning struck. A 26-year-old man was declared dead at the scene, with
the other six suffering a variety of injuries.
The survivors were taken to hospital in Wetaskiwin. They are in serious
but stable condition. They suffered various injuries, including burns,
Krebs said.
The group included residents of both Saskatchewan and Alberta, but
police haven't released any names yet.
Richard Ozero, CTV Edmonton's weather specialist, said the active
weather in the Edmonton area is starting to calm down, but there are
severe weather warnings for the southern half of the province.
He recommended that people seek shelter either indoors or in vehicles
when lightning storms hit. They should stay away from high ground,
water, open spaces and trees.
