SAN DIEGO – A mother died Monday morning one day after being attacked by
her 14-year-old daughter inside their Scripps Ranch home, according to
San Diego police.
Rebecca 'Becky' D'Aoust, 56, was taken to Sharp Memorial Hospital Sunday
morning in 'grave condition' after she was hit in the head several times
with a blunt object, believed to be a hammer, according to San Diego police.
The teenage daughter was originally taken to juvenile hall on suspicion
of attempted murder, but homicide Lt. Kevin Rooney said he expects that
will be upgraded to suspicion of murder.
Detectives expect to meet with the District Attorney's Office this week
to determine what charges the teenager will face in court and determine
if she will be tried as an adult. If charged as an adult, she would face
much more serious punishment if convicted.
Police have not revealed what sparked the attack and have not released
the identity of the daughter because she is a minor.
The woman's husband, James R. D'Aoust, and a 21-year-old daughter were
inside the two-story home when they were awakened by a scream, Rooney
said. A third daughter, the oldest, was away at college.
Officers were called to the home on Canyon Lake Drive near Pinetree
Drive at 8:46 a.m. and found the woman on the kitchen floor with serious
head injuries, Rooney said previously.
Neighbors in the upscale neighborhood described the family as quiet and
close. They said they did not exhibit any signs of trouble.
