Tropical Storm Hernan churns in Pacific*

Friday, August 08, 2008

MEXICO CITY — Tropical Storm Hernan gained strength on Thursday as it
churned far off Mexico's Pacific coast.

Hernan could reach hurricane strength by Friday, the National Hurricane
Center in Miami reported.

On Thursday night the storm had maximum sustained winds near 65 mph (100
kph), the center said.

Hernan was located about 755 miles (1,215 kilometers) southwest of the
tip of the Baja California peninsula and was moving westward, farther
out to sea, at about 13 mph (20 kph).

Hernan is the eighth named storm of the Pacific hurricane season.
