A BUSHFIRE is burning out of control in a pine plantation in north
eastern Tasmania, authorities say.

The blaze began yesterday on Forestry Tasmania land near the town of
Mathinna, 54km west of Scamander, and has burnt 100 hectares of
plantation land, a Forestry Tasmania spokesman said.

“The fire had quietened down overnight and we put containment lines
around it but because of some strong winds today it broke those lines
around midday,” Forestry Tasmania incident controller Paul Rosevear said.

“Our aim tomorrow is to get control lines around the fire again tomorrow
as soon as possible as the fire is burning close to private pine
plantations.”

At its height, as many as 50 firefighters from Forestry Tasmania and the
Tasmania Fire Service, backed by two helicopters and three bulldozers,
were battling to control the blaze, Mr Rosevear said.

“The weather forecast for tomorrow is similar to today but our crews
will be back out from first light to try to contain the fire.

“There are no private dwellings at risk at this stage but the fire is
burning close to private plantation land,” he said.
