on Saturday night.

travel chaos

Traffic was brought to a standstill by flash floods as more than two
inches of rain fell in two days in some parts of the country.

Much of Gloucestershire and the West Country had heavy rain followed by
blizzards, leaving motorists stranded for up to 12 hours.

A young boy died on Saturday when the Ford Escort he was in collided
head-on with a Nissan 4x4 in icy conditions on the A25 at Abinger
Hammer, near Dorking, Surrey.

The driver of the Escort was airlifted to hospital, where his condition
was critical.

Eleven people were injured when 10 cars were involved in a crash on the
M3 in Hampshire in bad weather on Friday night.

Seven people had to be freed from the wreckage and two were seriously hurt.

The Met Office forecast continuing unsettled conditions for the next few
days, with downpours and strong winds across south-west and north-west
England and South Wales, and snow over higher parts of Scotland.
