WASHINGTON, Dec. 22 (Reuters) - A 5.8 magnitude earthquake shook
Simeulue, Indonesia, an island west of Sumatra, on Saturday, the U.S.
Geological Survey said in a posting on its Web site.

The quake, at a depth of 21.7 miles (35 km), had its epicenter 137 miles
(220 km) west northwest of Sibolga, Sumatra, Indonesia, USGS said.

Earlier on Saturday, a 6.4 magnitude quake rattled Indonesia's half of
New Guinea island.

Located in a very active seismic region where several tectonic plates
meet, Indonesia suffers frequent earthquakes.
