Typhoon leaves 3,000 houses without power in South Korea*

SEOUL, Sept 18 (AFP) Sep 18, 2006

Typhoon Shanshan left some 3,000 houses without power after battering
the southeast of South Korea, the disaster agency said Monday.

One person was injured by a falling signboard and power supplies were
cut for hours to 2,950 homes in North Kyongsang province and Busan, the
National Emergency Management Agency said.

Power pylons were felled by strong winds but electricity had been
restored to most homes by Monday. Damage reports were still coming in
from Ulung Island in the Sea of Japan (East Sea), where the typhoon was
moving northward.

One ship sank off Ulung Island early Monday but no casaulties were
reported, acccording to YTN cable news television. Yonhap news agency
reported one sailor was killed Sunday while berthing boats on the
southern island of Jeju.

The typhoon cut across Japan's southern island of Kyushu Sunday and left
eight people dead or missing there.

Shanshan was expected to move further away from South Korea Monday
afternoon.
