It will soon be winter but 2006 looks like warmest yet*

Last Updated: 1:44am GMT 28/11/2006

It will take a prolonged cold snap to prevent 2006 being the warmest
year on record in Britain, weather forecasters said yesterday.

With only a few days to go, this autumn looks likely to be the warmest
on record as well.

The previous record, set in 1730, will be easily broken, according to
the weather historian Philip Eden.

He said: "Although this month began with a week of cold and frosty
weather, temperatures have once again risen well above the seasonal
average during the last three weeks.

"It is predicted that the last few days of the month will be
exceptionally mild, with readings of 14C-16C occurring widely."

Although the first four months of the year were, together, the coldest
since 2001, the remarkably consistent warmth since then means that 2006
is likely to be the warmest year on record in Britain.

Mr Eden said December would have to be more than 1C colder than average
to prevent the record being broken. The previous warmest year came in
1990 when the average temperature was 10.67C.
