TWO teenage girls who were hit by a freight train may have fallen asleep
on the tracks while sunbathing, emergency workers said.
Rachel Brown and Destiny Phaneuf, both of Lebanon in Miami, were lying
on a train trestle at a popular swimming spot when they were hit by the
train yesterday.
Witnesses said they heard the girls, who are both in a critical
condition after suffering amputations, scream, and saw them try to move
before they hit.
The train's conductor also reportedly saw the girls and blew his horn
but was not able to stop in time, wmur.com reported.
"My heart is still pounding," Christie West, who lives across from the
tracks, said.
"I'm shaking. I'm very, very upset. I hope and pray everyone is OK
through this."
Emergency crews searched the water after the girls were transported to
hospital.
"Any time you have an amputation, you always try to find a body part and
reattach it if possible," Lebanon Fire Assistant Rescue Chief Jason Coty
said.
Police said they were investigating why the girls didn't hear the train
coming.
