-- _ April 24, 2007: Nine U.S. paratroopers from the 82nd Airborne
Division are killed when a truck bomb explodes next to their patrol base
in Diyala province northeast of Baghdad.

_ Jan. 20, 2007: A Black Hawk helicopter, hit by small arms fire,
crashes in Diyala, killing 12 American soldiers aboard.

_ Dec. 1, 2005: Ten Marines are killed by a bomb inside an abandoned
flour mill near Fallujah.

_ Aug. 3, 2005: A Marine amphibious assault vehicle hits a roadside bomb
in western Iraq near the Syrian border, killing 14 Marines.

_ Jan. 26, 2005: A U.S. CH-53 transport helicopter crashes in bad
weather in Iraq's western desert, 220 miles from Baghdad, killing 30
Marines and one Navy sailor.

_ Dec. 21, 2004: A suicide bomb attack at a mess tent on a base near
Mosul kills 22 people, including 14 U.S. soldiers.

_ Nov. 15, 2003: Two Black Hawk helicopters collide while trying to
avoid ground fire in Mosul, killing 17 U.S. troops and injuring five.

_ Nov. 2, 2003: A Chinook transport helicopter is shot down by a
shoulder-fired anti-aircraft missile near Fallujah, killing 16 American
soldiers.

- March 23, 2003: Eleven American troops are killed in an ambush of
their convoy in Nasiriyah. Army Pvt. Jessica Lynch and six others are
captured.
