Earthquake strikes Greek island*

AP

ATHENS, Greece - An earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 5.5 has
struck the southern Greek island of Crete, but no immediate injuries or
damage have been reported.

The Athens Geodynamic Institute says quake struck at 3:20 a.m. Thursday.
It was centered in the Zakrou area of eastern Crete about 240 miles
southeast of Athens.

Seismologists say the quake was not related to the strong 6.5 earthquake
that hit western Greece on Sunday. That quake, near the western port
city of Patras, killed two people, injured more than 200 and flattened
or severely damaged more than 200 houses.

Greece is one of the most earthquake-prone countries in the world. In
1999, a magnitude 5.9 quake near Athens killed 143 people.
