ATHENS, Greece -- A strong earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of
5.7 struck near the Greek capital before dawn Wednesday, followed hours
later by another quake off the Aegean island of Karpathos, the Athens
Geodynamic Institute said.
No injuries or damage were reported from either quake.
The first struck at 4:58 a.m. with the epicenter 55 miles southwest of
Athens in the Argos area, the institute said. The second had a
preliminary magnitude of 4.6 and struck at 10:16 a.m. Its epicenter was
260 miles southeast of Athens, beneath the sea bed east of the island of
Karpathos.
On June 9, a magnitude-6.5 earthquake struck near the western port city
of Patras, killing two people and injuring more than 200.
A 5.9-magnitude quake closer to Athens in 1999 killed 143 people and
left thousands homeless.
