Earthquake Strikes New Caledonia*
SYDNEY, Australia - A moderate earthquake struck Friday near the French
islands of New Caledonia in the South Pacific, the U.S. Geological
Survey said.
The magnitude 6.4 earthquake struck around noon local time about 100
miles east of New Caledonia's Loyalty Islands. There were no immediate
reports of any injuries or damage.
Stuart Koyanagi, a geophysicist with the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center
in Hawaii, said the quake was too small to generate a tsunami.
