Another Australian Salmonella outbreak affects 40*

AUSTRALIA - TEN people have been admitted to hospital and another 30
have received emergency treatment following an outbreak of Salmonella
induced gastroenteritis linked to a bread shop in Sydney's west.

Sydney South West Area Health Service (SSWAHS) is investigating the
outbreak involving at least 40 people, many of whom ate products from a
Homebush hot bread shop on the weekend.

Public health officers have so far identified 22 of the people ate
either pork rolls or chicken rolls from the French Golden Hot Bread shop
in Homebush West.

Six have so far been confirmed as having salmonella infection.

The Public Health Unit is warning anyone who may have eaten these food
products from the bread shop between Friday March 23 and Tuesday March
27 to watch out for the symptoms of salmonella infection and seek
medical care.

Common symptoms of salmonella infection usually last four to seven days,
and include nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, fever and abdominal pain.

The NSW Food Authority has sent inspectors to the bread shop to examine
food safety practices and to sample foods for laboratory tests.

In the meantime the bread shop has been prohibited from producing or
selling the implicated foods.

Dr Leena Gupta, SSWAHS director of public health, said anyone who
contracts salmonella infection should stay home and not return to work
or school until 48 hours after the symptoms have stopped.

People suffering symptoms should not prepare food for others until at
least 48 hours after they have completely recovered from the illness.
