Tornado reported as storms rip Conn.*

HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) — A series of dangerous storms that produced at
least one tornado swept across the state Thursday afternoon and the
National Weather Service urged residents to find safe shelter and remain
indoors.

The weather service said a tornado touched down just after 3 p.m. in
Thomaston in the western part of the state. There were no immediate
reports of injuries, but winds as high as 80 mph brought down trees and
powerlines in the storm's path.

The state emergency management office monitored the storm's path
throughout the afternoon, said Rich Harris, a spokesman for Gov. M. Jodi
Rell.

Connecticut State Police spokesman Lt. J. Paul Vance said troopers in
their Litchfield, Canaan and Southbury barracks reported heavy rain and
wind damage, but no immediate word of injuries or major property damage
as of late afternoon. State police planned to keep more troopers on the
job through the day.

The storms moved the west, prompting the weather service to issue severe
thunderstorm warnings for the entire state through much of Thursday night.

It was part of the same weather pattern that caused storms in New York
on Wednesday, stranding motorists in flash floods, delaying flights and
knocking out power to more than 50,000 people in the New York City
metropolitan area. That storm also produced a tornado, which touched
down in Long Island Wednesday morning.
