Stonehenge in running to be new wonder

AROUND 50 druids gathered at Stonehenge, the 5000-year-old British
standing stones, overnight to celebrate its inclusion on a list of
potential new seven wonders of the world.
Stonehenge, in Wiltshire, south-west England, is the only British
landmark selected for a shortlist of 21, which will be whittled down to
a final seven to be unveiled on July 7, 2007.
It is up against attractions such as the Eiffel Tower in Paris, the
pyramids of Giza in Cairo and the Kremlin in Moscow, in the New7Wonders
project, launched in 2000.
But Rollo Maughfling, archdruid of Stonehenge, insisted that the stones
which attract around 800,000 visitors a year have a special attraction.
"After five millennia, Stonehenge is still a vibrant, living temple," he
said.
"Druids believe that Stonehenge is as relevant now as when it was
constructed. Its builders understood how to live in harmony with the
natural environment and today's world has much to learn from Stonehenge."
The New7Wonders project was developed by filmmaker and explorer Bernard
Weber and will give half of its net revenues to restoration projects
around the world.
