COLOMBO, Sri Lanka -- At least 11 people were killed in landslides in
the tea growing region of central Sri Lanka on Friday, officials said.
"There are many places where there have been landslides and we have
received information that 11 people have died," said D.P.G. Kumarasiri,
a senior bureaucrat in central Nuwara Eliya district, 117 miles east of
capital, Colombo.
He said access had been cut off in some areas and officials were trying
to evacuate some 1,000 people in a school isolated by the landslide.
National Building Research Organization has sent its officials to the
area to identify landslide threatened areas and evacuate people,
scientist Kumari Weerasinghe said.
Nuwara Eliya is a mountainous region known for lush tea gardens that is
prone to landslides.
