21 Forest Fires Rage across New Brunswick*

MIRAMICHI, N.B. CANADA -- There were 21 fires raging across the province
Thursday, said Brent Roy, a spokesman for the New Brunswick Natural
Resources Department.. Of those, 12 were still being fought. Nine others
were considered contained, among them a 160-hectare fire near St.
Stephen, N.B. that had forced residents to flee their homes.

Roy said the problem is the hot, dry weather.

Temperatures in parts of New Brunswick and Nova Scotia reached near 30 C
Thursday.

In Nova Scotia, crews were stretched to the limit this week battling up
to 30 fires Wednesday, including a fire in Bass River that forced the
closure of two schools.

The lack of snowfall this winter has put many parts of Nova Scotia at
high risk of an intense wildfire.
