TORRENTIAL rains in Kenya killed 10 people, displaced thousands and
destroyed hundreds of houses in northern and coastal regions over the
past five days, officials said.
Four people drowned near Isiolo, about 200km north of Nairobi, and more
than 1000 others were forced to flee their homes as rains pounded the
arid region.
“We have so far confirmed that four people drowned,” Isiolo district
commissioner Evans Ogakwa said.
The new fatalities brought the countrywide toll from floods to 10, after
the weekend drowning deaths of six people in and around the Indian Ocean
port of Mombasa, about 500km southeast of Nairobi.
Red Cross officials said more than 2000 people had been displaced, roads
and bridges destroyed and several schools flooded in low-lying regions
along the coast.
The onset of seasonal and often heavy rains in recent weeks has
compounded problems already brought by a recent drought as floods have
inundated some of the worst-affected areas, displacing thousands of people.
