Britain has been warned to prepare for severe gales this weekend. Gusts
of up to 70mph are forecast for England and Wales tonight and Sunday.
Forecasters also warned of heavy rain following one of the driest
autumns on record.
A Met Office spokesman said the "gusty" weather could loosen tiles and
bring down tree branches, making driving conditions hazardous,
particularly on country roads.
He said: "After a quiet couple of months, it will be the first
significant weather event for this autumn and winter period. However, it
will not be exceptional for this time of year.
"The winds will be strongest in England and Wales. For a change, it will
be less windy in Scotland." The blustery conditions are expected to ease
during Sunday and next week will be "unsettled".
This autumn is on course to be one of the driest since records began in
1914, forecasters said.
Only 8.1in of rain fell between September and Nov 25, far below the
seasonal average of 13.2in. In contrast, this summer was the wettest on
record in Britain.
