A STRONG earthquake with a magnitude of 6.2 has hit the Solomon Islands,
seismologists said, but there were no immediate reports of damage and a
tsunami alert was not issued.
The quake struck at 3:20am (AEST), 65km west of Kira Kira, which is on
San Cristobal island, and 184km southeast of the capital Honiara, the US
Geological Survey said.
It occurred at a depth of 89km, the organisation said.
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre in Hawaii did not issue an alert for
the region.
An 8.0-magnitude earthquake in the western Solomons in April last year
triggered a tsunami that killed more than 50 people and displaced
thousands.
