AUSTRALIA - QUEENSLAND Premier Peter Beattie says he wants the state's
churches to pray for rain.
Mr Beattie, who met with church leaders today, said he would ask for the
prayer campaign to help ease the horrific drought.
"I actually would like to see everybody pray for rain," Mr Beattie said
ahead of today's regular meeting.
A spokesman said the leaders were now considering an
inter-denominational week of prayers for rain.
But no time frame had yet been set and it had not yet been decided if
the prayers would be held in all Queensland churches, or just in
drought-hit areas.
"I'd be hoping that people would pray for rain all the time," Archbishop
Bathersby said to Ten News.
Brisbane Anglican Archbishop Philip Aspinall also agreed that praying
for rain was not out of the ordinary.
"There's nothing unusual about it at all," Dr Aspinall said.
But the Opposition described Mr Beattie's call for rain prayers in
churches as a political stunt.
"I'm sure the response isn't going to be any better for Mr Beattie
joining them in a political stunt," the Liberals' health spokesman Dr
Bruce Flegg said.
