Earthquake hits off Taiwan*

A strong undersea earthquake of magnitude 6.0 rocked eastern Taiwan
Monday, the Central Weather Bureau said, but there were no immediate
reports of damage or casualties.
The tremor struck at 9:40 pm (1340 GMT) with an epicentre 33 kilometres
(20 miles) southeast of Hsilin in Hualien county. It occurred at a depth
of 30 kilometres.
The bureau did not issue a tsunami alert.
Taiwan, which lies near the junction of two tectonic plates, is
regularly shaken by earthquakes.
