Worse yet to come for Australian bushfires*

VOLUNTEERS fighting fires across NSW had a moment of respite tonight as
the bushfire crisis eased, but authorities are warning that severe
weather conditions forecast for the weekend may reintensify the threat.

More than 40 fires burning throughout the state today are now under
control, with major transport routes back to normal after extended delays.

A Rural Fire Service (RFS) spokesman said both rural and domestic
firefighters were adequately prepared for today's harsh conditions of
record high temperatures and high winds.

But while temperatures over the next few days are expected to be milder,
the weekend's forecast could have dangerous repercussions.

“The forecast told us we were expecting a bad day - it was, we had crews
on standby basically all across NSW,” said RFS spokesman Cameron Wade.

“The response to today's fires was very quick, therefore we were able to
keep them small,” he said.

”This was a spike in the weather and tomorrow will certainly not be a
horror day. It's all over as far as the heightened activity.

“Fire season has a long way to go but at this point in time everything
is fine, we have to wait and see what the weekend brings,” he said.
