A STRONG earthquake measuring 5.6 was felt on the Italian mainland and
on the island of Sicily, officials said.

There were no immediate reports of injuries or damage.

Seismographic officials in Rome said the epicentre of the quake appeared
to be in the Mediterranean, off the coast of the Calabria region in
southern Italy.
