AUSTRALIA - VICTORIAN firefighters have been flown to the state's remote
north east to battle 50 bushfires burning out of control.
The fires, ignited by lightning strikes, flared up overnight and are now
burning hundreds of hectares of state forest and national park.
The area is rugged and inaccessible in parts with few tracks making
access difficult, a Department of Sustainability and Environment (DSE)
spokeswoman said.
More than 400 officers from the DSE and the Country Fire Authority are
on the ground supported by water bombing aircraft.
"At the moment there are no private assets at risk, all the fires are in
remote areas," the DSE spokeswoman said.
Most of the fires are in the Alpine National Park north of Licola and Dargo.
DSE and CFA remind residents living in fire-prone areas to keep
up-to-date of weather and fire conditions and be ready to activate their
bushfire plans.
