European stock markets suffer big losses*

LONDON (AFP) - - European stock markets suffered a major sell-off,
posting losses of between three and five percent mid-day Monday
following sharp falls on Asian markets rattled by fears of recession in
the United States.
The London FTSE 100 index was down 3.66 percent at 5,685.90 points, the
first time it had gone below 5,700 since July 19, 2006.
In Paris, the CAC 40 plunged 4.87 percent to 4,844.42 while in Frankfurt
the Dax lost 5.37 percent at 6,912.69 points.
