TWO people were killed in a boating accident and an Air Canada plane
made an emergency landing due to turbulence as foul weather engulfed
central Japan, officials said.
A pleasure boat and a fishing boat collided around 8pm (AEDT) yesterday
inside Yokohama Bay, said a coast guard official stationed at the major
international port just south of Tokyo.
"Three anglers on the fishing boat, which was taking out its clients,
were injured in the collision. They were immediately taken to a hospital
and two of them later died," the official said.
"The investigation is still on-going and no arrest has been made. We are
questioning the captains of the vessels, reviewing the ships and seeing
their equipment," he said, adding that details of the case were not clear.
The area was experiencing cold rain and moderate wind, he said.
Meanwhile, an Air Canada Boeing 767 from Shanghai to Vancouver was
forced to make an emergency landing at Narita International Airport near
Tokyo due to turbulence over Japan, airport police said.
"Four cabin attendants, all Canadian women, were injured. The most
serious one cut a finger of her right hand," an officer said.
Earlier in the evening, a Japan Airlines flight from the western city of
Kobe to Haneda airport in Tokyo experienced severe turbulence, injuring
one passenger and one cabin attendant, said a Haneda airport police officer.
Central Japan was hit by heavy rain and strong gusts of wind for much of
Sunday.
Air turbulence is common over Narita airport owing to the unstable
atmospheric conditions in the region.
