Hi MSU,

My name is Kevin and I'm a grad student in the Ethnic Studies department at Cal.  I went to a few of your mtgs. last year and the conference as well.  I am part of a group of UC Berkeley working group that includes Ethnic Studies grad students and those from other depts. interested in studying the topic of mixed race, trasnationalism and biculturalism, specifically within mixed-Asian peoples (all types of mixed Asians though!).

If you could please forward this to the MSU listserv and if there are any students in the group that would like to attend (mixed Asian or not), we would be more than happy to have them.

Thanks.
-Kevin

Transnational Mixed Asians In Between Spaces Working Group

Second Meeting:

Wednesday October 27th
5:30 pm - 7:00 pm

691 Barrows Hall

In traditional Ethnic Studies, discussions of mixed race have been marginalized, misappropriated, tokenized or simply left out.  In order to allow for a collaborative environment to critically engage on topics ofmixed race, diaspora and transnational identity, this working group aims to create an interdisciplinary space for academic dialogue and to provide a safe space to discuss this cutting-edge work.  This workinggroup also serves as a space for scholars to present their work and to receive feedback as well as to discuss collaboration on future research projects.  The previous year’s members of the group will be presenting their work at the upcoming Critical Mixed Race Studies Conference to be held in November 2010 at De Paul University in Chicago, IL.  Some of the group’s current members' research interests include mixed race identity and the US Census, mixed race youth political activism, Amerasian studies (Okinawan, Vietnamese, and other sites of US military involvement in Asia), transnational discourse, the Asian diaspora in Latin America and the effects of conquest and colonization on indigenous Asian peoples.  Overall, we seek to encourage and promote research on these interrelated and overlapping topics, to solidify a legitimate space in academia for the study of mixed race/bi-cultural/transnational peoples and to bring together scholars from multiple disciplines and research areas to collaborate on future research in this area.

At this meeting we will continue discussions from last meeting and continue planning events for this semester and next as well. If you are interested in being a part of thisworking group, but cannot attend this first meeting, please contact Kevin Escudero at kesc...@berkeley.edu.
