I echo what Jon said. I had my drum rebuilt by US Spars (1999 B411). Total cost was $204.07 (in 2020) including shipping and a new furling line installed in the drum. The $2,000 quote you got is nonsense if all you need is the drum rebuilt. Turnaround time was quite quick as well from US Spars.
I got my old main jammed two years ago. I paid a yard to get the sail out – quite expensive given crane and man hours. It happened with the new main and a friend showed me how to work it out putting boom off to one side and getting downward pressure on the boom while working the sail back and forth – that saved me a lot of cash as I didn’t need the boatyard again. I echo the advice to always be slow and careful when furling to avoid overrides and misery.
Good luck.
