I want to replace the pinstripes on a 2005 B423 and would appreciate some suggestions. I thought the current ones would peel off using a heat gun on a low setting.  Didn't work.  Has anyone use a stripping chemical or other approach successfully?

I just had mine done on my B 49.
The shipyard that I use here in Galveston, Texas used a heat gun,  it peeled pretty easy. I didn't use pinstripes tape. Instead  I had them paint it dark blue, almost black. They brushed it. They did a great job, the paint they used left no brush mark at all.

Thank you.  Guess I should have been more aggressive with the heat gun.

Low heat will help,  and I've found at the same time also using a single edge razor blade gently will take it off a little at a time. After being in sunlight for many years, the tape is somewhat brittle and doen't want to come off in one long strip. You'll be left with tape residue which can be cleaned off using 3M General Purpose Adhesive Cleaner (red and white can). It's not available in all states, probably because it works too well.

Since the pinstripe tape has been on your boat for 16 years, after removal there will probably be ridges where the gelcoat has been worn down where there was no tape. It's easiet to replace the old tape with the original size pinstripe tape from Beneteau Parts; last I checked, they still carried both the blue and green pinstripes. The ridges will act as a guide as to where the replacement tape should go; you'll cover them up. If you want to replace the pinstripes with something different, you have a time consuming job ahead of you wet sanding (with a sanding block) to get rid of the ridges.

I removed and replaced the striping on my 2008 B40. A few observations to share:
  • Peeling with fingernails or a plastic scraper did not work at all. The stripes adhere very well, and get fragile as they age, so do not peel off like a new vinyl stripe would.
  • Peeling with vinyl remover spray worked very poorly. I don't think the remover was able to get under the stripe to dissolve the adhesive, and I was unwilling to leave it in contact with the gel coat for more than a few minutes.
  • Peeling with a heat gun and a plastic scraper worked poorly. I wanted to use a plastic scraper in order to be gentle on the surrounding gel coat, but it was not sharp enough to do any good.
  • Peeling with a variable temperature heat gun set to ~375 degrees and a metal spatula worked very well, albeit slowly. The metal spatula left behind some nasty looking metallic-colored smudges, but these were very easy to polish out. I did not get any gel coat scratches - but then again I was careful to use a very nice scraper with a very good edge.
  • Using a razor blade instead of the spatula would likely have been faster and easier, but would have made it much easier to scratch the gel coat.
  • I did not try one of those "decal eraser wheels" because I imagined little bits of vinyl flying into the ocean if it worked.
