Does anyone know the correct starter motor?  The original was a Mitsubishi model, I replaced it with  a different replacement from a Perkins dealer but it does not seem to turn the engine as fast.  The replacement from the dealer has a 10 tooth pinion gear, where the original has 8 teeth.

Many thanks,

Bill

Typical starter used on the Perkins Perama M20:

  • Voltage: 12 V
  • Power: ~0.8 kW
  • Pinion: 8-tooth gear
  • Type: Gear-reduction marine starter
  • Rotation: Standard clockwise (viewed from drive end)
  • Mount: 2-bolt flange

Common OEM / cross-reference part numbers:

  • 185086540
  • 185086370
Most M20 sailboat engines use a small Mitsubishi-style reduction starter. Possible part numbers include

  • M2T47281
  • M002T47281
  • M003T32589
  • M3T32589
Do you have photo or part # of the original one that was removed?  Is that one rebuildable? Many auto shops will rebuild them at a fraction of the price of a marine place (alternators and starter motors)

Hi Mark,

Thanks so much.  I think it would be the M002T47281.  Unfortunately I disposed of the old starter and deleted the pictures of the part number.  I checked, and the M002T47281 is listed as an exact fit for the Volvo MD2020.  I understand the MD2020 is the same exact engine as the Perama M20.

The engine is cranking slowly, even though both house and starter batteries are new and read 12.5 volts.  I am thinking the 10 tooth pinion on that starter does not get as much torque as the 8 tooth on the mitsubishi.

What do you think?

Thanks,

Bill

12.5v is only 90 to 95% full.    A 100% charged 12v battery should read 12.8v.    Should not matter, should still spin the engine over

if the engine is not spinning over fast I would see if your connections are corroded or loose
or maybe its 20 degrees F where you are and you are just trying to turn over a really cold engine
