Just wondering if anyone has any experience replacing the cutlass bearing on their 411.

We ordered replacement bearings according to the Manufacturer specs. 40x30x120mm

They are rubber bearings. The old one was worn and had a few millplay on the shaft. The replacment parts were manufactured by Super Marine P No: 809920 and are indeed 40x30x120 however they do not fit. The old one looks identical as a unit but is slightly smaller OD. So is a slight interference fit.

The new ones will not go in without sanding the OD down.

I was expecing a brass composite type bearing but this rubber tube seems to be what Beneteau fitted from new.

My instinct is to sand it down to fit, has anyone else experienced issues with replacement bearings?

Cheers
Spart

Welcome to the world of Bene Cutlass Bearings.  Here is my story which hopefully may help you and/or others:

Last fall, I noticed play in my prop shaft (BO461, MY2000), so I set about the task of replacing my Cutlass Bearing.  Same size as yours - 40x30x120!  After removing the rudder (also needed to replace the lower rudder bearing), propeller, transmission coupling (what a treat that was) and the prop shaft, I was ready to remove the old Cutlass Bearing.  What I quickly came to realize is that my current Cutlass Bearing was NOT the same as the Bene part I had acquired direct from Beneteau.  It was in fact a Johnson/Duramax composite bearing that was installed.  Johnson/Duramax makes 2 basic types for our boats - a brass bearing and a non-metallic version.  Mine was the non-metallic.  This was the first discovery.  The second discovery was that the PO (or a hired service provider) needed to bore out the shaft tube in order for the aftermarket bearing to fit.  The aftermarket 30mm (ID) bearing ONLY comes in a 45mm (OD) option.  I had lost 5mm of my shaft tube!!

Not only did I have to get the aftermarket cutlass (I went with the brass version this time), but I also had to build up my shaft tube as it was considerably weaker after being bored out by 5mm!

A few thoughts on your situation - only speculation since there are no pictures.  Perhaps your 411 also had this same treatment and what you have actually removed is just the rubber lining of an aftermarket cutlass bearing.  If you still have the outer lining (either brass or composite) left in your shaft tube, then both the Bene part or the aftermarket won't fit.  This happened to a fellow 461 owner that I frequently interact with.

Perhaps if you can post some pictures of your shaft tube, it might be more clear to determine if you might have the remains of an aftermarket bearing left in there.

Hope this helps!

I bought a small fiber optic camera on Amazon - creates a private wifi network and you view it using your phone. Might be useful to look inside the saft tube to see what's in there
