Shuttle Buses Ease Festival Parking/Viewing
WATKINS GLEN, NY: Friday, September 5 looks to be the busiest Grand Prix Festival of Watkins Glen to date. This year’s Hot Wheels® Grand Prix Festival of Watkins Glen presented by Chemung Canal Trust Company, plays host to the final venue for the Hot Wheels® 40th Anniversary Road Trip, which kicks off at Mattel's El Segundo, Calif. headquarters on August 19, and will make stops in four cities across the country before reaching Watkins Glen. The excitement level will be topped only by spectator attendance.
To better ease the travel of getting around Watkins Glen that day, several shuttle buses have been added to the schedule and more parking lots will be available to visitors this year.
Free shuttles will begin running at 1:30 p.m. and continue until 10 p.m. Expanded parking will be available at three locations, which are all centrally located a block east of Franklin Street, and will be closed to traffic. As in previous years, event goers and shuttle riders may park at the Watkins Glen School District Bus Garage at the south end of Decatur Street. Additional parking is located at the east end of 12th Street, with one lot by the Field House and another near the main entrance to the high school. Clute Park will offer parking in both the usual Community Center parking area on the south side of NYS Route 414 and in the regular Park lot on the north side of NYS Route 414.
Riders may access the bus at two locations along Decatur Street, Middle School and Lafayette Park, while staying just a block from Franklin Street’s action. The Middle School stop will allow Festival goers to walk over to Smalley’s Garage, Concours de Elegance, Knapp Winery Sporting Roadster parking, and the historic Start/Finish line. The Lafayette Park stop will open on the Tour de Marque - Triumph display parking area and the Legends Speak; Red Newt Winery Founder’s Tour display parking on 7th and 8th Streets and surrounding areas; the Hot Wheels® Glenkhana; the Hot Wheels® Interactive Zone (across Franklin Street); and Glenora Run display parking north on Franklin toward the lake. Both stops bring spectators closer to the action when the race cars come down from the track at 4:30 p.m. for display and laps of the original road course.
Additional Information: Franklin Street closes at 1 p.m. on Sept. 5 and the excitement begins soon after. Plan to take advantage of easy parking and less walking by using the shuttle at the Grand Prix Festival of Watkins Glen. Additionally, volunteers for the Festival are always needed, both for shuttles and other duties. If you or someone you know may be interested, please contact Watkins Glen Promotions at 607-535-3003 to sign up.
