A GREAT WAY TO START THE 61st RACING SEASON AT WATKINS GLEN

Saturday 4/25 and Sunday 4/26

 

 

The International Motor Racing Research Center (IMRRC) and Watkins Glen International (WGI) have announced that the annual Opening Day of the track has been expanded into a two-day weekend for 2009. Some of the key events include; a tribute to Mark Donohue featuring a reunion of 8 of his memorable race cars, the first release of the new Mark Donohue biography,” Mark Donohue: Technical Excellence at Speed,” from David Bull Publishing, written by Michael Argetsinger, and as in past years, the opportunity for race fans to drive the historic and challenging Watkins Glen race course.

 

On Saturday, April 25th racing enthusiasts will have a chance to view the former Donohue racecars and to get up-close with author Michael Argetsinger during the monthly “Center Conversation”, hosted by the International Motor Racing Research Center (IMRRC) from 1 to 3pm.  Argetsinger's first book,” Walt Hansgen: His Life and the History of Post-War American Road Racing was critically acclaimed and received a Gold Medal for biography and was named Best of Books for 2006 at the International Automotive Media Awards.  The talk will focus on Argetsinger’s new book and will feature comments and recollections by some of the people who were part of Donohue’s illustrious career including; Karl Kainhofer, Malcolm Starr, Jerry Kroninger, Walter Czarnecki, John Woodard, Don Cox, Daniel Luginbuhl and Mark’s oldest son, Michael Donohue. Admission to this event is free.

 

Sunday, April 26th, Watkins Glen International will be the place to be for every Mark Donohue fan. Argetsinger’s new book will be available for purchase and fans will have the opportunity to have their book autographed by the author and the Donohue personalities who will be present. From 12-12:30pm ” many of the race cars driven by Donohue including, the Penske PC-1 Formula One car, a pair of Lola T70 Can Am cars, the Offy powered Eagle raced in the 1973 Indianapolis 500, a 1967 Trans Am Camaro, Donohue's first race car, an Elva Courier, the 1965 Shelby GT 350R that he drove to the 1965 SCCA Northeast Division, B production championship, and a Porsche 917-30 Can-Am car will take to the historic Glen circuit for a series of Tribute Laps. Immediately afterwards, the cars, drivers and many of the people associated with Donohue’s career will conduct a “meet-and-greet” in the Gatorade Victory Lane, offering fans a chance to see the cars, take photographs, and provide another chance to have their copy of the new book signed by Argetsinger and the many personalities who will be in attendance. . As a special bonus David Donohue, the winner of the 2009 Daytona Rolex 24 hour endurance race and Mark’s younger son, will also be present at this event. Throughout the day race fans will also have the opportunity to drive the historic Glen circuit. For $20 fans will be able to drive three laps around the same track that Mark Donohue and many other great racing legends have driven since 1956. The track will open at 9:00am, with laps starting at 10:00am and ending at 3:00pm, including a half hour break for the Tribute Laps at noon. Proceeds from the Opening Day laps will benefit the International Motor Racing Research Center (IMRRC).
