1) General Body and Committee Meetings: We are finally starting our regular general body meeting schedule after Labor Day! We'll be meeting in Bingham 103 every Monday evening at 7PM, with committee meetings directly after. We should usually be done with everything by 8PM. This week, we'll have a general introduction to Chapel Hill and North Carolina politics for those of you who are unfamiliar, as well as updates about our exciting events planned for the semester. After the general body meeting, you can choose to attend either the political or service committee meeting, in which you'll have a chance to talk with each other about specific projects you want to work on this semester.
2) Alternative Fall Break Trip Application: Attached is the application for our annual Alternative Fall Break Trip to Washington, D.C. On this third installment of the trip, there will be one day of lobbying for education reform in our nation's capitol and two days of community service in the DC area. Applications are due to ydaltfa...@gmail.com by 11:59PM on Wednesday, September 21. For questions about the trip or the application, contact Trip Director Amber Pace at aep...@live.unc.edu.
3) Voter Registration: Young Dems will be in the Pit every weekday until Early Voting ends on November 4. From 10AM to 2PM you can find us with the red "Register to Vote Here" signs and a box of clipboards and registration forms. Bring a friend and stand in the Pit asking students if they would like to register, or just hold a sign and let them come to you!
4) EqualityNC Rally: Some Young Dems will be travelling to Raleigh on Tuesday to participate in EqualityNC's rally against the proposed anti-LGBT "marriage" amendment at the General Assembly building. The rally starts at noon and should be over by 1:30PM, but it's a really awesome reason to skip class! If you need a ride or you want to make some posters (and possibly t-shirts) tomorrow night after the meeting, email President Nathan Westmoreland at wwes...@live.unc.edu.
5) Lee Storrow Campaign: This week, Lee Storrow's campaign is holding a phonebank in the Union at the YD office (2515) at 7PM. On Saturday, come canvass with Lee from 11AM to 2PM! We'll be meeting at Lee's house (208 Barclay Road) and spreading out from there. For information or questions, Like Lee's Facebook page or email Campaign Manager Evan Degnan at edegn...@gmail.com.
6) YD/CR Debate: If you're interested in trying out for this semester's debate between the Young Demcrats and College Republicans, email Vice President Renee Sullender at rs...@live.unc.edu to sign up for a tryout time on Thursday afternoon (times flexible). No experience at debate is required to make the debate team (we've had great debaters who had never debated before!) and we're looking for people who are passionate and well-informed about current political affairs.
7) Gender Non-Specific Housing Survey: Are a student at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill who has previously or currently lives on campus? Do you want to help push for a Gender Non-Specific Housing Policy Option? Then go the UNC LGBTQ Center website and complete the Campus Housing Survey. We will use this survey to support the Gender Non-Specific Housing Proposal that will be presented to Chancellor Holden Thorp. Thank you so much for your help and if you have any questions please contact Kevin Claybren at clay...@live.unc.eduor UNC-CH LGBTQ Center at lg...@unc.edu
