A friend of mine wants to try out a Fixed Gear in his bicycle.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fixed-gear_bicycle

So, he'd like to know:
  • Where one could buy a Fixed Gear in Bangalore?
  • How practical it would be on Bangalore's roads?
Thanks,
Navin.

It's the least practical thing to ride a fixed gear bike on Bangalore roads. Hell, it's the least practical thing to ride anywhere.
He'd be a danger to himself and others. You can easily convert any(gearless) bicycle to fixed gear. You'd just need a fixie hub, which can be gotten online.

Hi Navin,

It's best if your friend can find an old school classic and convert that into a fixie, else, you can always buy a single speed mid range bike,
and then convert that as well, or, well the last option would be to import a mongoose or something like that.

The factors that go into riding a fixie, people tell me your mental to be firstly riding in BLR on a cycle, to top it all, they think your kukuu!, if your, riding a fixie, once they realize it has no breaks what so ever.

If your comfortable riding a fixie, it will have no implications. Just makes your a smarter and sharper rider with some insane lower body strength.

I converted my my 1979 10 speed gran touring motobeacan in to a fixie and rode it to work every day while I was in Bangalore. The guys at Cycling Boutique helped me figure it out. Fantastic job done by them.

My recommendation to your friend, first get a hand of a fixie n see if your friend is comfortable, and secondly safety first, ride with a helmet and brakes!

Peace,
Ben

That is if you ride it without brakes. A fixie even with just one brake is one of the most practical bikes to ride in Bangalore traffic.
