*Pedalshaale 2*
*Vijayanagar sessions*
*10th January 2026* .
*10.45 AM -12.45 PM*
With cyclone raging in the Bay of Bengal, Namma Bengaluru had perfect weather for cycling ! Unfortunately with some program in the skating area involving other school children and parked buses, the plan of using adjacent parking area to do turns and circles went up in smoke.
HM had delegated coordination to two students *Chand Pasha* and *? Rahul* who were very helpful. This inclusion is appreciated 🙏
*Trainers* : 5
*Teachers* : 8
*DULT* : Tejatha ma'am
*Students* : 15 +10
The bicycles were out and ready, that helped and the session begun on time !
Aravind removed left pedal from two bikes to allow standing scoot with half pedalling.
*Ali's report*
*Batch 1*
*Bhavani* managed to balance by standing scoot and almost immediately started pedalling on her own. Significant lurch at the start.
*Batch 2*
*Annapoorani's* first session and she took to cycling like fish to water ! Star of the day.
*Aravind's report :*
We removed left pedal for two cycles and gave it to Tejatha mam. This was train balance by half scooting with left leg, right leg on pedal.
*Batch1*
Taught balancing to *Prashant* and *Subhiksha* and they are improving
Little bit of scooting training to Riya
*Batch 2*
Taught balancing to *Annapurna* and she is able to ride now
Taught start stop to *Amritha* and she is able to ride better...
*Shamala's report :*
*Batch 1:*
*Sharath* continues to practice scooting, he's fairly independant and also quite determined to get it right. *Shivani* manages to get on the saddle by herself but unable to maintain balance. I was with her through the session helping with her scooting - which with a bit more practice she shud be able to do do right.
*Batch 2:*
*Dhanvi* struggles to scoot, but she's determined to get it too, needs a lot of practice and some close tutoring to help her get it right.
*Naga Prakash 's report :*
*1st batch* :
*Shivani* - Started practicing pedaling with support. Needs more practice as she has lurching problem.
*2nd batch* :
*Kruthika* : She started off with pedaling with little support, because she didn't had breakfast, she wasn't able to push much. She took a break, had breakfast and started practicing with much more energy.
*Chaithra* : Initially started with scooting, but due to height issues, moved to pedaling with support. Later asked her to practice standing scooting.
Ali adds :
Ali demonstrated half pedalling to second batch students
*Half pedalling :*
This is to negotiate the bicycle when balancing is not possible. Very useful in crowded areas and traffic signals.
*Principles:*
1. It uses bicycle's pedalling power to save energy.
2. Uses tripod principle for stability.
*Steps for half pedalling* :
1. Left leaning, left leg walks, does not push
2. Right leg on pedal, provides the forward power.
3. Right pedal at bottom(6 o'clock), is swung up by twisting it first, ( heel down toes up) and then pushing up and forward. (4 o'clock)
4. Push down from 4 to 6 o'clock to move ahead
5. Move left foot forward like normal walking.
6. Repeat steps 3 to 5.
*Common mistakes:*
1. Not enough left tilt, left heel off ground.
2. Bringing cycle to middle while moving forward, Immediately destabilizes, and if continued, right foot lands on the ground,
3. Pushing with left foot, right foot just resting on the pedal. This wastes energy and the rider gets tired.
4. Keeping left foot on the ground too long, so it actually behaves like a brake, reducing forward momentum.
HM Srinivas sir @Srinivas Sir HM BBMP Vijaynagar School again provided bananas to all volunteers. Thank you sir
we need more space to teach next steps, i.e. turning, circle and figure of 8 for students to learn better control.
