The Sustainable Data Centers Working Group was established in 2024 to tackle these questions and provide recommendations to guide the City's plans and policies. From January 2025 through June 2026, the Working Group met monthly to:
Throughout the year-and-a-half period, the interdepartmental Working Group researched and discussed key data center topics; heard from industry experts, utilities, environmental organizations, community stakeholders, and government agencies; and reviewed practices from jurisdictions across the country to establish policy recommendations for the City of Chicago.
In July 2026, the Working Group completed its recommendations report and submitted it to the City Council Committees on Economic, Capital and Technology Development and on Environmental Protection and Energy.
