Gina and Heidi Nortonsmith attend Northampton Friends' Meeting with
their two sons. Together since 1990, Gina and Heidi first
celebrated their commitment with a public ceremony of friends and
family in 1993.
Gina and Heidi describe their talk as,
Our faith journey to becoming a family -- radical witness for equal marriage. After becoming parents, they sought to create
legal protections for their children in the absence of state
recognition of their family structure. Ultimately, they chose to
sue their home state in a landmark case that in 2004 established a
right to equal marriage for same-gender couples throughout
Massachusetts. Throughout their legal battle, Gina and Heidi drew
heavily on their Quaker faith and community, both in maintaining their
integrity and purpose and in framing their role in this divisive and
politically-charged issue in a loving and spirit-filled context for
their young sons
